This song was recorded in response to Auckland becoming a UNESCO Creative City of Music. The Creative Cities Network promotes social, economic and cultural development among cities who have identified creativity as a strategic factor and enabler for sustainable urban development.

However, while the song 'Open Mic' was written to celebrate Auckland becoming a UNESCO Creative City of Music, it also serves as a warning of the threats posed by the city's planning rules to live music venues, including Open Mic nights.
